Lesson on love with…the Valentine 2-way Sleeve Dress from the NEW Collection LOVE by New York Couture

There’s one day a year to actually celebrate love and affection; Saint Valentine’s Day.  Ironically this holiday was named after Christian martyrs; who had nothing to do with love.  ….this is odd history, no?

HISTORY LESSON:  It’s the Greeks and Romans that celebrated romance in the month of February.  In Ancient Athens they celebrated the sacred marriage of Zeus to Hera.  And in ancient Rome it was on February 15th that they celebrated the god of fertility; the festival was called- Lupercus.  But on the eve of this celebration…the young Roman boys would write the girls names and place them into a jar. Each boy then drew a girl’s name from the jar and they were partners throughout the festival. After being paired, the children would often continue to see each other throughout the year and on occasion even fell in love and got married.  <—-cute start of the “Valentine card” don’t you think : )

Medieval times were also similar…. choosing a sweetheart was literally in the luck of the draw. A girl might find herself paired up with the local buffoon for an entire year because he happened to draw her name in the annual village lottery. On the other hand, she might be joined with her heart’s desire – live happily every after.

It wasn’t until February 14, A.D. 496, the feast of St. Valentine was declared.

So where did cute little Cupid come from then?

In Roman mythology…he is the god of desire and affection.  To the ancient Greeks he was the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.

The inspiration for this dress was simple….how can I create something sultry…yet flattering, fun to wear, …but that can also be worn any season? The solution….combining two dresses literally into ONE!!
